- Press on the brake with your right foot while pushing on the clutch with left foot.

What is column shift?
A column shift is a gearshift lever mounted on the steering column. The gearbox is automatic, and controlled by a column shift mounted in the side of the steering column. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, you will have to disconnect the transmission shift rod from the steering column shift lever.
Is the steering column shifter ugly or classy?
The steering column shifter on the column is ugly to me and not classy. I have an older S class and was completely disgusted when looking at the new S class when it came to the shifter. To me it is much more luxurious to have the nice leather coated shifter in your right hand in the center console than a plastic piece on the column.
How do you take a shift lever out of a steering column?
Gently tap it upward with a hammer and the pin will come up and out. 2. Pull the shift lever away and out of the column. Look inside the lever hole and locate the shift return spring. 3. With a small flat blade screwdriver, firmly pry the spring out of the seat and towards the driver.
Do you have to put new steering column boot on?
The detent plate has been ground down to almost nothing in places. Shift tube, cleaned and primed. Reinstallation, is, they say, the reverse of removal. Remember to put the new steering column boot on before you get the shift tube reassembled. There’s no easy way to do it after the fact if you forget.
Why is the gear shifter on the center console?
Just wanted to hear all your opinion on Mercedes’ decision to move the gear shifter from the center console to the steering column. They started with the ML, S, CL, GL, E and now the new CLS. Although I have seen some pictures and videos of the W212 E class “SEDAN” with the gear shifter on the center console.
