Can you tell the difference between A 2500HD and an ally 4×4?
I had a 2500HD 4×4 w/ 8100 & Ally for a few years and have owned a 2500 4×4 Sub w/ 8100 & 4L85e for over a decade. I eventually had the ecm in the truck tuned and had torque management removed, and it was definitely noticeble on the bottom end (couldn’t tell a difference in mpg).
Is the Allison 4L85E a good transaxle?
The 4L85Es can withstand a lot of power and are overall a good trans proven through many years. If I remember correctly about torque managment. TM has little to do with pulling power, mostly for the transmission shifting and smoothness.
What kind of pulling power does an Allison 8.1L have?
TM has little to do with pulling power, mostly for the transmission shifting and smoothness. In defense of the 8.1L, it is a decent long life engine that gave reasonable pulling power for Suburbans and pickups in the gasser class. Mine had the famous CSK and oil consumption even though it was pampered from the beginning.
Which is better a trans or an Allison?
Actually the 4L85 should put more power to the ground as its has less loss compared to the allison. As far as I know both trans use torque management the same. For what its worth I have a Yukon XL and love how it pulls. Actually the 4L85 should put more power to the ground as its has less loss compared to the allison. Click to expand…

How long does a Silverado Sierra 8.1L last?
The 8.1 and Allison combination should last a long, long time. You may have needed to throw parts on to correct some lacking maintenance from previous owner, but I would not get rid of it if you have it in good shape now.
What’s the mileage on an Allison 8.1 diesel?
If it run the motor at a lower RPM than the 4L80 does in 4th gear then its even farther out of the TQ curve. Mine runs about 2200 RPM at 75 MPH. When it kicks down a gear and jumps to 3000 RPM it pulls like a pig. If the ally would put it down at 1800 RPM it would shift even more and likely get worse mileage.

What are towing expectations of a 8.1L 2500HD?
Then needed a pickup and have had a few 2500 pickups with 6.0 engines. As noted the 8.1 towing ability is very similar to the 6.0, at least in my view. The only real difference I noticed was in very low speeds the big block seemed to perform a little better. You want see much difference as another person said by moving to a 6.0 gas engine truck.
