Can you put mineral oil over Rubio monocoat?
Rubio Monocoat oils are not compatible with all stains. Because of this, we cannot recommend using our oil finishes over stains outside the Rubio Monocoat line.
Is Rubio monocoat oil based?
Unlike polyurethane, Rubio Monocoat works by penetrating the wood rather than creating a protective barrier on top of it. At the same time, since it is not oil based, Rubio Monocoat doesn’t produce all of those nasty fumes and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that can be both an environmental and health hazard.
What is 2C oil?
2C stands for 2-component. Part A is the oil, and Part B is an accelerant and hardener. Oil Plus 2C is 0% VOC and does not contain solvents or water.
Is Rubio monocoat linseed oil?
We’ve recently discovered (and tested!) a wood oil product worth raving about: Rubio’s Monocoat Natural Oil Finish is a non-toxic, linseed-based product that we love. Any excess oil is wiped or buffed off after the reaction occurs, and no sanding or additional coats of oil are required.
Can you varnish over Rubio monocoat?
If you let the Rubio Monocoat dry overnight it would work to put lacquer over it however you could do better. The window is close enough to outdoors it would be better to use an exterior finish. I would recommend a marine grade spar varnish. The difference in finishes is the lacquer would dry harder than the spar.
Can you Poly over Rubio Monocoat?
More research indicates poly can be applied over the Rubio in theory but their site isn’t overly positive about doing it.
Can you sand off Rubio monocoat?
Rubio usually recommend not sanding past 150 because the oil binds more effectively at lower grits. I sand to 180 and haven’t found it to be a problem. After 180, water-pop the surface by spraying liberally with water. After it dries, sand lightly again with 180 to knock down the raised grain.
Is Rubio monocoat a Foodsafe?
Rubio Monocoat oil forms a molecular bond with the topmost microns of the wood. A knife can cut deeper than the product penetrates, leaving raw wood exposed and susceptible to mold and/or bacteria growth. However, as our product is Food Contact Compliant, it is acceptable to use on charcuterie and serving boards.
Does Rubio monocoat need the accelerator?
However you may need to purchase additional Component B Accelerator at a later date if your accelerator has hardened in the tin over time. You may also need to purchase some to mix with the RUBIO MONOCOAT Hybrid Wood Protector….RUBIO MONOCOAT Accelerator (Component B)
