Can you kill a car battery by overcharging?
A: If you leave the charger connected continuously, even at a mere 2 amps, the battery eventually will die. Overcharging a battery causes excessive gassing — the electrolyte gets hot and both hydrogen and oxygen gas are generated. On sealed batteries, the buildup of gases could cause the battery to burst.
What’s the problem with my 2005 Mercury Mariner?
Having the same problem with my 2005 Mercury Mariner. Yesterday while driving down the road, the ABS light shows up and then minutes later radio shuts off, then the dashboard, wipers going real slow, then lights went out. Car seemed to be running OK. Made it home and now the car will not start.
What kind of engine does a Mercury Mariner Premier have?
Have a 2005 Mercury Mariner Premier, 108k miles, 3.0L engine. Was driving last week and the ABS light came on. Then slowly the dashboard lights dimmed to black and lost electricity. All this within a couple miles of driving. Limped home and tested the battery – dead. Recharged and tested the next morning – still fully charged.
Why does my alternator not charge my battery?
Yet the lighter load that the alternator put’s out is not enough to overcome the resistance, and does not charge the battery. Also, follow the ground cable from the battery to be sure the far end is not corroded too. One thing more about corrosion issues.

Is it possible for an alternator to over charge?
You are correct, 18 volts is much too high, but an alternator can not cause over-charging unless it is assembled incorrectly with one of the brushes grounded through its mounting screw. Over-charging is caused by the voltage regulator driving the alternator too hard.
Why does an alternator charge in cold weather?
Since Chrysler invented the electronic voltage regulator for 1970 models, they have always had temperature compensation built in to help batteries charge in cold weather. By putting them in the Engine Computers now, they can also modify charging voltage based on other variables such as wide-open-throttle, engine overheating, and things like that.
