Can you change gears without pressing the brake?
If vehicle shifts into gear without having the brake pedal depressed, then BEWARE – your vehicle does not have BTSI in all key positions and could roll away. Most vehicles have BTSI in some positions; but not all. The most common position is the half click forward.
Can you break and change gear?
Yes, it can be done! I wouldn’t advise it for the weak at heart or someone that isn’t prepared to tear their gears up, but it can be done. Down shifting without the clutch can be done also.
What happens if an automatic transmission is shifting from neutral to Drive while the car is moving?
Shifting to neutral from drive while moving will do nothing at all. Assuming this automatic vehicle has a torque converter, when you shift back into drive, the computer will select an appropriate gear for your speed, (usually the one you were just in, unless you’ve slowed down) and place the vehicle into it.
What happens if you forget to shift?
If you fail to shift properly, you wind up in the wrong gear, and the car just doesn’t accelerate like you want it to. If you wind up in too high a gear, the engine might not have enough torque to maintain that speed and you could stall.

What happens when gear in use without break?
Car is in park and engine is off. There is no voltage to solenoid and it is in the extended locked position. Engine is turned on and brake pedal is depressed. Voltage is then sent to locking solenoid which is energized and retracts the locking pin to allow gear shift lever to be moved.
Why is the gear shift lever not locked?
The physical position of the locking pin on the gear shift lever is signaling the ECM that it is not in its proper position, which generate the warning that the gear shift lever can be moved without depressing the brake. You need to answer “Why isn’t the solenoid returning to the lock position?”
Why do cars allow you to shift gears?
This is for safety, to be able to stop a runaway car regardless of if it’s in drive or reverse. The ability to pull the car into drive from neutral comes form the occasional need to limp a car along when it’s having engine troubles.

What to do when your car won’t shift into gear?
Press the override button, press the brake and move the shifter from park into neutral. Replace the cover over the button and start the car with the transmission in neutral. Do not move the transmission back into neutral, otherwise you’ll have to redo the procedure. Check the brake lights are working.
