Can argon form a liquid?
Argon gas condenses to a colourless liquid at −185.8 °C (−302.4 °F) and to a crystalline solid at −189.4 °C (−308.9 °F). The gas cannot be liquefied by pressure above a temperature of −122.3 °C (−188.1 °F), and at this point a pressure of at least 48 atmospheres is required to make it liquefy.
What gas is used for TIG welding?
argon
The normal gas for TIG welding is argon (Ar). Helium (He) can be added to increase penetration and fluidity of the weld pool. Argon or argon/helium mixtures can be used for welding all grades. In some cases, nitrogen (N2) and/or hydrogen (H2) can be added to achieve special properties.
How do you change solid argon to a liquid?
Deep cooling of gases make them take liquid form. Since the temperature of liquefaction is different for each gas, it becomes possible to separate liquids in different phases. The combination of high and low pressure allows you to make process of distillation better and faster.
Does argon dissolve in water?
Argon has a water solubility of 62 mg/L at 20oC and pressure = 1 bar. Argon does not remain dissolved in water, at least not in higher than normal concentrations.
Can I use CO2 for TIG welding?
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is actually an active gas. It causes oxidation, especially around tungsten (which is the electrode in a TIG welder). So, in short, TIG welding needs pure argon to protect the tungsten electrode, and MIG welding works best on a 75%/25% argon/carbon dioxide mix to get good weld penetration and flow.
What are the uses of liquid argon?
Argon is also used as a shield gas in casting and stirring of ladles. Argon is used in aluminum manufacture to aid degasification and to remove dissolved hydrogen and particulates from molten aluminum.
Is argon a gas liquid or synthetic?
Argon is colorless, odorless, nonflammable and nontoxic as a solid, liquid or gas. Argon is chemically inert under most conditions and forms no confirmed stable compounds at room temperature. Although argon is a noble gas, it can form some compounds under various extreme conditions.
Is argon a solid a liquid or gas?
Argon is a gas at standard conditions. However, at low temperature and/or high pressures the gas becomes a liquid or a solid. The argon phase diagram shows the phase behavior with changes in temperature and pressure.
How much does argon cost?
Argon is produced whenever liquid air is distilled to get nitrogen and oxygen. So public documents will tell you about the local market cost. When big guys are getting Argon locally for $20 per 330cu.ft and you’re paying $20 on your 40 cu.ft tank, well you can deduce that local material cost is no greater than $2.42.
