Can I drive with a bad viscous coupling?

Can I drive with a bad viscous coupling?

You can drive with a bad VC in a 249 no problem. I know several people who have been driving on bad Viscous Couplers for years. People who say it can damage the drivetrain really are full of crap.

What is the point of a viscous coupler?

A viscous coupling is a mechanical device which transfers torque and rotation by the medium of a viscous fluid.

What is a VLSD?

V.L.S.D. stands for Viscous Limited Slip Differential. Basically it acts alittle better than open gear, but not as good as regular L.S.D. It acts somewhat like a broken L.S.D.

What does viscous coupler mean on a Jeep Cherokee?

People hear “viscous coupler”and say ooooooooooohhhhhhhhh that fragile glass thing deep in there that runs on snake oil and performs motion magic cause of all the misleading info on the web. It’s nothing more than a hydraulic diff and really not that fragile at least in a Jeep anyway.

Why does a viscous coupler not lock up?

The properties of the fluid cause it to thicken (become more viscous) which increases the drag on the plates and transfers torque to the wheels that aren’t slipping. A viscous coupling never fully locks up.

Can a front drive shaft be removed from a Grand Cherokee?

Front Drive shaft ? I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee Overland and was wondering if I could remove my front drive shaft without couseing problems with the transmission or transfer case ? it is a quadraa drive setup. I was wanting to see if the fuel mileage would improve?

Is there an open diff on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

But they biased more power to the rear until the VC kicked in. If you have the early model and want a streetable mod of the VC, then yuo could drain it (theoretically) and you would have full-time 4 hijust like the 242. Essentially operating like an open diff. Problem is no lo lock.

How are the plates on a viscous coupler made?

There’s no friction material; they’re all metal and the plates have slots and holes cut into them. The odd-numbered plates are splined to the inner hub and the even-numbered plates are splined to the outside hub (the case). The unit is sealed and filled with a special fluid, silicone I think.
