Why is there coolant in my cylinder head?
Coolant either leaks past the head gasket out of the engine or past the head gasket into the cylinder and combustion chamber. If you have an external leak you will notice coolant leaking from in between your engine block and the head. When the engine is shut down of course the coolant will then leak into the cylinder.
Can a head gasket leak coolant externally?
Intake and front cover gaskets can leak coolant externally or into the crankcase, mimicking the symptoms of a head gasket concern. An external oil leak from a head gasket is not common and is most times misdiagnosed. The correct coolant type, coolant level and coolant mixture must be maintained at all times.
Where is the coolant leaking from behind the engine?
Seems to be in the area between the 2 spark plugs on the drivers side. Seems to be an external leak because no coolant in oil, and no check engine light. I had been noticing coolant lowering every week or so, but not much. Now after this trip, the leak is much more pronounced.

Had the timing belt and water pump replaced, and now it’s OK. If it’s a bad head gasket, one sign of that would be white smoke coming out of the exhaust consistently.

Answer…….the radiator overflow tank . Check on its’ bottom for slick antifreeze that keeps reappearing when you wipe it off or for a tank that keeps dropping to a certain level but never runs dry because the leak is on its’ side, up higher . Mine was baffling….before I noticed this… on my 97 Camry .
