R129 SL500 Roof and Roll Bar not working after low battery! I hope you’re well. I’ve just been away for the last 5 weeks. My friend started the SL every week, but when I got in it for the first time today, the battery was almost flat, with just the starter motor ticking over.

Dash lights worked, but windows stopped working soon after. So, a quick call to the AA got it started, with the help of a charge pack. He did say that a new battery was needed, after testing it.

As your roof starts to move, different problem. Unlikely to be control unit. Get the position of the micro switches read, one could have failed. Do try a battery disconnect, its free. Do the windows work ok on their own.

The problem is not the pump itself but a bad (leaking) piston-cilinder, part A2308001472, cost about 200 euros; but i also paid a lot of work, in total i paid 1.247 euros for the repair. The roof has 2 cilinders like this, one in the left and one in the right to lift the roof when you press the red button in the trunk.

What to do if your Mercedes has a roof problem?
Before doing all that you would want to verify S117 is the problem. A Mercedes’ Star Diagnosis computer can do this quickly; alternatively, you would remove the electrical connector to the roof controller and check the input from S117 with a basic electronic multimeter.

When to replace battery in Mercedes SL Class R129?
Replace your battery if it is 5 to 7 years old. A slipping drive belt will squeal and a broken one will leave you stranded. Check your drive belt. A broken drive belt tensioner is just as bad a a broken accessory drive belt. Is your car running a little hot in traffic?
