Why is my Nissan Maxima not shifting into 1st gear?

Help!! 2000 Nissan Maxima 3.0 V6 (VQ engine) 5-speed, 180K, original clutch, original engine mounts, original (rusted) radiator support bracket. My son just called and said that he is no longer able to put the stick in to 1st or 2nd gear. This happened while coming back from Charlottesville to DC on the road.
