Why does my Yukon XL have a 4WD light?
I was recently getting a service 4wd light in my 03 yukon xl. the lights for the switch also went out. I crawled under the truck and started looking at connections to the transfercase. I found that one of the connections had a small amount of corrosion in it. I pulled it apart, sprayed it with contact cleaner and reassembled.

Found on the net it was a solder connection problem on the 4WD push button panel. Was a pretty easy fix. Just removed the dash bezel, control panel. Took the 4×4 control panel apart and re-flowed the solder on the connector pins where the wire harness connects to.

Service 4WD notice routinely reported on dash. Inability to change 2WD to 4WD (or back) particularly after extended running period. Periodic solution by turning ignition off then back on, but solution is unpredictable. My Truck is stuck in 4WD Low.

In my case it was as simple as a loose steering gear box. At 86K miles on a heavy vehicle I can see it needing adjustment sometime in the vehicle’s lifespan.
