A few more possibilities to keep in mind… Stack tachometers have an internal battery that maintains the memory, including the programming memory. If an older Stack tach suddenly “goes crazy”, it may be time to send it to Stack to get the battery changed.

First, let’s narrow down the symptoms.
How does a Smiths chronometric mechanical tachometer work?

Why does my tachometer bounce when I run?
Put the muffs on and fired her up. Ran perfectly, except I noticed the tach would read out as if the RPM was increasing when it wasn’t. Then it would bounce around on its way back down to the correct (lower/accurate) reading and be fine. Then every so often it would repeat the same pattern.
Where does the tach gauge and ECU come from?
The ECU RPM count is from the CAS but the Gauge is from the output of the Tach Gate on the 90 coil pack. That signal is conditioned by the 90 noise filter before going to the gauge and ECU. The ECU RPM count is from the CAS but the Gauge is from the output of the Tach Gate on the 90 coil pack.
