Why does my power wire keep melting?
Heating in an electrical circuit is always caused by current flowing through a resistance. The simple answer is: if the fuse holder melted, it is due to a lost connection, not the power wires drawing too much current.
What causes the fuse box above the battery to overheat?
It tends to get a break in the wire near the fuse box that then arcs and overheats; this is not a problem with a short otherwise the fuse would blow, this is an arc. I have a 2005 Golf MKIV and it did this also. Lost a/c, fans, overheated. The B+ wire from the alternator to the battery appears to be too small a gauge.
Can a loose battery fuse cause a fire?
Main Battery Post Becomes Loose: This can cause a fire, in fact 10,000 or 1000’s of fires happen on Ford products equipped with their 2G alternators, because of this. Since the fire is started by heat in the loose connection, it is the alternator that is producing the power that creates the fire.
How does an alternator fuse and battery fuse work?
Since the fire is started by heat in the loose connection, it is the alternator that is producing the power that creates the fire. So breakers and fusible links will not and did not prevent this. Main Battery Cable Shorts: This causes a direct to ground surge, usually large enough to burn/blow the wire in half instantly.
How to replace the fuse box above the battery?
Replace the box. Get a 49″ #4 battery cable from parts supply house. The wire will have eyelets on each end. Use one eyelet and remove the other. Replace the missing end with one with a smaller hole; I found one at tractor supply. Next remove part of the stock so the end will fit the new fuse box.
What happens if you drop a fuse on a battery?
Like for instance dropping a tool or other metal object across the positive and negative battery lines. Without the fuse as protection, the wiring could overheat, melt and even lead to a fire.
Do you need a fuse for a battery?
A dedicated power wire direct from the battery including a fuse is the best way to avoid interference issues. That being said, if it was wired into the panel before and you didn’t have issues I would do it the same way again. Favorite Lake or River Anywhere I’m getting bit.
Where does the fuse go on a boat?
I redid all the wiring on my boat and there is a fuse on the block dedicated to the graphs, with a wire that goes to a switch I put on my console.
When to use a fuse or circuit breaker?
Always have a fuse or circuit breaker rated for the equipment between the battery and device…always. I would go to the fuse panel. I had the same problem with a much older unit staying on. Once I got in to it I found the problem was a bad connection with the terminal that was crimped on to the end of the wire.
