Why does my Nissan Patrol have a cold starting problem?
This will create white smoke and a rough start idle for a while until it gets the air out of the lines. It is a pita to pick out this problem because when the vehicle is hot, due to heat expansion, the o-rings are more pliable and have swollen a bit due to heat. In this case they seal and don’t let air in.

What to do if your diesel engine starts cold?
There is a rubber o ring on the fuel filter thread that sometimes gets “misplaced”or as suggested loose hose or split allowing air into system. Try priming it first thing in the morning before starting, lift pump also helps to hide a small leak or expose a large one. Leaking injector. Glow relay or plugs.
What happens to the engine when the engine is cold?
When the engine is cold the air fuel mix enters the cylinder and is compressed and ready for ignition, cold fuel, cold air cold cylinder= lower compression. Take a empty soda bottle fill it with 1/4 cup of cold water, put the cap on and shake it up for about 3 seconds, now squeeze the bottle, it should squeeze in easily.
