Why does my Mercury Mountaineer make a clunk noise?

Why does my Mercury Mountaineer make a clunk noise?

I have a 2010 Mountaineer. When I’m at 50 miles or higher and I leave off the gas or step on the gas there is a clunk noise. It doesn’t do it cold but after ten minutes or so it starts. It feels like a universal joint would act when it was going bad in the old rear wheel drive cars.

Is there a problem with my Mercury Mountaineer?

I have a 2004 Mountaineer with about 55,000 miles on it and we have experienced the same problem of skipping and transmission problems when in reverse from the time we bought it. The dealership always said they could find nothing wrong with it. Now it is whirring and just stops dead. If you wait a few minutes it will start again.

My 2001 Mountaineer’s 4R70W transmission overheats. I replaced the filter and drained the fluid from the torque converter drain plug. I filled the transmission with 12 quarts of Mercon V. The capacity is 13.9 quarts.
