Why does my headlight socket keeps melting?

Most of the time, the issue is caused by the OE wire gauge, which is too small (typically 20 gauge) to handle the current drawn by the headlight bulbs. In other cases, the issue is the result of loose terminal connections, which can cause resistance in the circuit and lead to overheating.

How do I check the ground on my headlights?

Determining the Ground Wire

  1. Remove the connector from the back of the headlight.
  2. Trace the wires back from the connector as far as you can see them.
  3. Turn on the ignition of the vehicle and turn on the headlights to high beam.
  4. Set the multimeter to DC Volts to measure 12 volts.

What to do if your headlight plug melts?

So I ordered a new set of headlights from ebay and once again the Plastic Plug that goes into the headlight bulb melted along with the wires themselves, Within 3 months both headlight plugs melted, Tried Ceramic Plugs, the Wires melt, Really don’t know what to do here.. think it might be time to sell the thing after it gets out the shop..lol

Hello GMTnation I have had an issue with my Headlight Plugs burning up inside the Headlight assembly, I purchased new Headlight assemblies in december and noticed today that the headlight was out on one side again.. took the bulb out and What do you know Light and Pigtail Melted.. Not sure what to do here ..

Headlights get hot, but they SHOULDN’T get hot enough melt the connection. You have a wiring issue, not a connector issue. mariogh and G13Tomcat Thank this. My truck is an International Prostar, 2009, cummins ISX engine.
