Why does my Harley rev high when I start it?

A motorcycle idles high when it is getting too much of an air and fuel mixture in a low speed or neutral position. This is usually caused by the idle screw on the carburetor being out of adjustment, an out of place throttle handle screw, a bad carburetor throttle spring, or a sticky throttle or throttle cable.

(Could be you went through 50 key cycles with no engine issues) When you get off the interstate & the idle is high,,, if you were to power it off and restart the bike, does the idle calm down or does it resume the high idle. Would help to know how high the RPM was, but you have no tach. (?)

Step 2 – The idle air control motor (valve) is responsible for controlling the engine idle speed, if this part fails or becomes weak the engine idle speed could become erratic, additionally, this condition may or may not trigger the MIL (check engine, service engine soon light.)
