If you had problems with your second gear for a while, then your gearbox is fk’d. The thing is that if you have something wrong with the gearbox, 2nd always starts showing the signs. Having difficulty getting it into second gear, maybe a scratch when switching to second and so forth. This you need to remember.
Is there a point in trying to change gears fast?
There’s no point in trying to change gears as fast as possible (even on a race track, the gain is minimal) but it’s very hard on the box. I second Timo’s assessment: it’s likely that the synchromesh gear (AKA synchro) is worn badly enough that it’s not able to do it’s standard rev matching for you.

These pics show an AGB 16V trans that was stuck in 3rd gear. Sometimes you find an 020 stuck in 3rd, and it is due to over shifting. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what part or parts fail to cause this to happen. To repair the trans, it must be opened. To open the trans, you have to remove the selector.
