Why are the fans not working on my Subaru Outback?
Enter your ride HERE to be a part of this month’s Outback of the Month Challenge! I have a 2006 2.5L Outback. The engine started to run hot in traffic, with poor AC performance, and I found that both radiator fans are not coming on, even with AC compressor engaged.
How to troubleshoot the air conditioning in a Subaru Outback?
Air conditioning problems can be costly to diagnose and repair. Save time and money by trying to troubleshoot the problems yourself. Take a few steps to determine why exactly the air conditioning is not working in your Subaru Outback. Check the controls first. Make sure the air-recirculation button is not selected instead of the air conditioning.
Is the sub Fan still working with the AC on?
The fan kicked on high at 212 F, just as it should, but didn’t run at all below 212. With the AC on, it ran on high all the time, so the engine temp was actually below 200 with the AC on. The main fan is still working today. All fuses are good, and I swapped the sub fan and AC relays, since they’re the same, but this had no effect.
Where is the blower motor on a Subaru Outback?
Find the blower motor under the glove box lower cover in a Subaru Outback. Remove it from its harness after disconnecting the negative battery cable, and removing the screws. Make sure the pilot lights inside the vehicle are working and the graphics display is lit. If these are not working correctly it might be the control panel or control cables.
What kind of air conditioning does a Subaru Outback have?
The 2001 to 2004 Outback with the H6 has some of the same leaky hose issues that plague the 4cylinder models. The newer Ac systems (2005 and up) are smaller than they have been previously and even just a slightly low charge can affect the performance.
Is there a DIY AC recharge kit for Subaru Outback?
Just curious if anyone has had luck using DIY AC recharge kit like you’d find at Advance Auto. The AC in my Forester is a little weak, it works but not as good as my OB, so I know the mechanical bits are working ok. Anyone have any insight, potential + or – with using one of these kits. Any better, cheaper alternatives?
Why does my Subaru air conditioner shut down?
So, the radiator kept the engine safe, but when the fans were kicking on, they were blowing A LOT of hot air at the evap unit. That would trip the AC temp sensor and shut down the AC. Yes that will happen if the radiator is clogged enough to limit air flow, thus not allowing the proper temp drop needed to take the heat out of the AC system.
Why does my Subaru Legacy Run low on AC?
The 2000 to 2004 Legacy and Outback suffer from leaks at the 2 Ac hoses one from the compressor to the condenser and one form the compressor to the Evap core. This causes the system to run low or empty.

How is the cooling speed of a Subaru engine controlled?
With applications made abroad — including parts made by the Japanese automaker — the speed of the cooling fan is controlled by a pulse–modulated fan motor. By way of contrast, in domestically made applications, fan speeds are activated by the powertrain control module. Either way, a fan can be diagnosed with the use of a code reader.
What should I do if my Subaru engine wont cool down?
To prevent this from happening, have your technician inspect your vehicle and explain that the coolant sensor and thermostat are properly calibrated. Furthermore, warm up and cool down the engine to test the reliability of the thermostat and sensor, and to vent any air that might be stuck in the cooling system.
How does the ECU work on a Subaru?
Right on, ECU controls the fans via the engine coolant temp sensor and a/c and vehicle speed (which is different sensor than for the temp gauge). my my my someone has been gettin uppity with the pics and diagrams and stuff lately…
