For now go to Bandit.com and follow their directions to register your EVO for their parts book. This will get you into looking at copies of Harley parts books for your year. Go to engine and oil pump and you will find the tappet screen and where it is. It will also show you how it goes back together.

The Evo’s don’t have heat problems, don’t have chains or belts in the timing chest that can do really bad things internally, don’t have problems with the crank, or the main bearings, don’t have problems with the comp sprocket, etc, etc. Can you tell which one I prefer? Is the bottom end of an Evo bullet proof?
As the fine gents said. I can only add that the EVO bottom end is mostly bullet proof, in particular late EVO’s. With proper warm-up that scoot can take some serious abuse, and the ’98 cases are good for future upgrades as well. Earlier cases – like mine – can crack if bored up for larger cylinders.
What to do if your Evo head gasket is leaking?
Look closely at the base gasket on the rear jug to see if it is leaking. If so or you decide to take the barrels off then use the Harely base gaskets for late EVO’s. Those gaskets are like using fly paper as they are sticky on both sides and until you pull the jugs loose again they will not leak.

Can a head gasket be replaced on a cyls?
Also if you have had leaking base gaskets on the left front of cyls., there is a “pigtail” fix available, but not really necessary with James or Comotec gaskets. I do not know anyone that has replaced head gaskets without doing base gaskets also. Be sure to find out why the head gasket sprung a leak.
