What would cause a connecting rod to bend?
A connecting rod needs to be strong and durable for the engine to survive. If it is too weak to handle the load of the combustion, then the extreme tensile forces on the connecting rod may bend or even break it.
Can you drive a car with bent valves?
A bent valve could start a fatigue crack in the stem and if it breaks you drop the valve in the cylinder. You could also hammer the seat beyond where a valve job could fix it or (it the exhaust valves are bent) burn the exhaust valve(s) up. I wouldn’t do it.
