I began by unbolting the drive shaft from the differential and secured it with a bungee out of the way. You do have to loosen the center driveshaft support to be able to push it far enough forward to get the centering sleeve off the locating alignment pin.

Thanks for your thoughts. check your guide arm bushings, on the c class they are known to fail often. they cause a clunking noise in the front end going over bumps. will also cause noise on any road. My car just started making a rattle/klunk as you describe and I’ve been trying to identify the source.
