What kind of steering does the Lexus RX 400h have?
The 2006 RX 400h is listed as having “Power Rack and Pinion Variable Assisted Steering ” which sounds like it’s NOT 100% by wire. That, is comforting! I don’t know but we should be able to read about it in the next long-term update on the vehicle when it is published.
Why does my Lexus RX 400h make a noise?
I recently purchased a 2008 RX400h and I was wondering if anyone has been experiencing a noise coming from somewhere in the front part of the cabin every time the steering wheel is turned? The sound is generally heard when making a right turn. Any ideas of what may be causing this???

What makes the 400h steering system so different?
My conclusion is that the 400h steering system is “different”. It feels like the electric boost or “centering power” is unsufficient at highway speed, or stated another way, that the front end is overly-sensitive to camber in the road.

Where did the 2008 Lexus RX 400h come from?
The 2008 Lexus RX 400h arrived in our garage just in time for the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, so we avoided airport hassles and drove to the show from San Francisco. Not only would the RX 400h offer a comfortable ride and room for two editors, a photographer, and luggage, its hybrid power train would save gas in Los Angeles traffic.
How much gas does a Lexus RX 400h use?
When we got into downtown Los Angeles, the RX 400h showed its true worth as we sat in 6 miles of 15 mph traffic on the freeway. For this 6 miles, the RX 400h used barely any gas at all, creeping along under electric power. The complete lack of emissions or fossil fuel burning was a satisfying distraction from the frustrating traffic.
What does the ECU do on a Lexus?
This article applies to the Lexus IS, GS, RX, ES (2004-2014). The engine control unit, or ECU, is basically the brains of your car. The ECU stores diagnostic trouble codes when it senses a malfunction so a mechanic can fix it later. It’s also the ECU’s job to store your driving data to customize your ride.
How does partial electric steering work on Lexus RX 400h?
The implication is that partial-electric steering design still allows you to steer when you have no electric power. In other words, the steering shaft is still mechanically connected to the wheels. Just had my 400h alignment fixed (See original post below).
Is the Lexus RX 400h in the shop?
I just received word that the RX 400h in our long-term fleet is in the shop. The Power Steering Computer failed. The vehicle has less than 3,000 miles on it. It needs a new computer which is on backorder at the dealer. The vehicle will be in the shop for at least a week.

What was the warranty on my Lexus RX 400h?
Last year while far from home my RX400h stopped dead on the highway. After having it towed 145 miles and losing 3 days of vacation, Lexus replaced the computer to the hybrid system. The car was under warranty so other than a LOT of hassle, it only cost me $150 not $10,000+. Two weeks ago, I was driving in town and my car died again.
Why does my Lexus 400h start on a cold start?
This is completely normal. The 400h will start up during a cold start to circulate oil, to get the catalytic converter up to temp, to provide heat on cold days or to charge the battery when it is low. This can happen at any time, but it will always fire up when on a cold start.
