Can you drive to top of Sandia?
Located just outside Albuquerque, the road to the summit, also known as Sandia Peak, is totally paved. It’s called NM-536 (Sandia Crest Scenic Byway). Starting at San Antonito, it is 21.40km (13.3 miles) long. It’s suitable for all vehicles.
How long is the tram ride in Albuquerque?
There are two Tram cars and they run every 15-30 minutes, they DO NOT run on a timed schedule. Once you board, its a 15 minute ride to the peak (upper terminal), where you will need to get off and can enjoy the views, go hiking, check out the TEN 3 restaurant, see the visitor’s center and go skiing in the winter.

Our favorite times were spent at Sandia Peak at night. The view of the Albuquerque lights were beautiful. If you go up to the “Crest” make sure you take a coat or sweater, especially at night. We still got to see the lights, but we were not able to see the Meteor shower.

There are two main ways to get to Sandia Peak: by car or the tramway, though you’ll also need a car to get to the tramway base terminal. If you’re traveling by car and are trying to get to the ski area from Albuquerque, take I-40 East to exit 175 then drive north on NM Highway 14 to the Crest Scenic Byway 536.
