In 1980 at the age of 21, Terry Fox undertook his Marathon of Hope, with the goal of running a marathon a day across Canada. His objective was to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, a cause that affected him personally. In 1977, Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg.
