SPECIAL. May 17, 2020 – May 23, 2020. Classified School Employee Week celebrates the support staff and paraprofessionals who help our early childhood centers, schools, and colleges succeed. Classified employees perform essential work, but it is often behind the scenes.
What is a classified employee?
Classified employee means a person who does not hold a professional education certificate or is employed in a position that does not require such a certificate.
What is a unclassified position?
An administrative position that qualifies as unclassified requires the employee to be capable of making independent decisions. Positions in finance, human resources, accounting, computer administration and marketing are examples of these positions.
Do California schools have Columbus Day off?
Columbus Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October and is not recognized as a school holiday in California.
Can a classified employee be fired?
How you are classified will determine your rights. Employees are supposed to receive employment benefits such as health and disability insurance. Generally, employees can be terminated only for good cause and with notice (unless their employment contract states they can be terminated at will).
Can classified employees supervise students?
CSEA wants to be clear that ciassilied employees cannot be given sole responsibility for student supervision because the Education Code requires that classified emploees who are supervising children must themselves be overseen by certilicated staff (Education Code § 45330(b) & 45344(a).)

What is ski week?
Ski week follows the Monday of Presidents’ Day every year. Traditionally local Los Angeles and Southern California schools give students a little extra time off and they all come skiing. Ski Week often happens during the schools semester break. Ski Week is celebrated all throughout town and well, adults come too.
