What is a tji Web stiffener?
Web Stiffeners are short pieces of wood (typically OSB) that fit between the web and flange. Loads applied to a TJI® joist must transfer through the bottom of the joist into the support structure-typically by means of a wood plate or joist hanger.
Do I need web stiffeners?
Web stiffeners are required at all supports on 22- and 24-inch joists. Web stiffeners are required under concentrated loads applied to the tops of joists between supports, or along cantilevers beyond the support, when the concentrated load exceeds 1500 pounds.
What is the purpose of Web stiffener?
Web stiffeners are nothing more than wood blocks. They’re either made out of lumber, wood structural panels or APA Rated Rim Board. Their purpose is to reinforce the webs of I-joists at different locations.
What do squash blocks reinforce?
Squash blocks are blocks of wood that are slightly taller than the depth of the joist. Web stiffeners reinforce the I-joist and prevent it from buckling. Sometimes they are required as fillers so that there is solid nailing for joist hangers.
What are the types of stiffeners?
There are two principal types of stiffener:
- Longitudinal web stiffeners, which are aligned in the span direction.
- Transverse stiffeners, which are aligned normal to the span direction of the beam.
How do you stiffen open web floor trusses?
The truss manufacturer recommend taking 2x4s and glue and screwing them parallel to the top chord of the trusses every 3rd or 4th truss to give some additional stiffness and that the existing strong backer bracing should benefit from that when helping to spread out the deflection.
How do you reinforce a loft floor?
How to Reinforce an Attic Floor with Sister Joists
- Clear the Joist Spaces. Pull out all insulation and any debris from all of the joist spaces so you can see the full length of each joist, including where it meets the exterior walls.
- Measure the Old Joists.
- Cut the Sister Joists.
- Install the Sister Joists.
- Install Blocking.
When do you need a web stiffener for a TJI?
When TJIs are used as roof joist, a web stiffener is always required if the low end is birdsmouth cut at the top plate.
When do you need web stiffeners on a continuous span joist?
Continuous span joist may require web stiffeners to help increase internal load capacity of the joist at the intermediate bearing. When joist hangers are used and the top flange is not lateral supported, the joist can rotate and will require web stiffeners.
What should the span of a TJI joist be?
• An intermediate bearing length is less than 5-1/4” and the span on either side of the bearing exceeds a given length. See footnote 1 below the TJI joist span tables on page 4 of TJ-4000 for more information.
Can a web stiffener be used to transfer load?
Due to the gap, the web stiffener does not function as a means to transfer load from above “around” the joist. For applications where greater vertical load transfer is needed, rim board, squash blocks and blocking panels are acceptable methods to transfer load from above, around the joist, to the bearing below.
