At home I went through the process a couple more times and found that if I unlock and open the door with the key the alarm will sound. This doesn’t seem right to me. Just curious if I am missing something or if others had any thoughts on this.

What happens when you turn on the factory alarm?
Once you turn the key on, the alarm is disabled and will not sound. Since you know the drill now, just be prepared to get in and turn the key on as quickly as possible. I cannot speak for other manufacturers but GM products with factory alarms have operated in this manner for over ten years.
