What does starting fluid do to an engine?
Starting fluid is more combustible than gasoline or diesel, and it’s also more explosive. This means that it ignites easier from a spark and generates more force to turn an engine over. Since it is highly explosive, you should only use a very small amount of starting fluid on whatever engine you’re starting.
Why does my lawn mower start with starter fluid then dies?
To give a meanngful answer we ned to know which B & S engine you are having trouble with ( Model & code numbers please ) and what it is in. My B&S lawnmower starts when I add starter fluid or prime for a while, then dies. I have cleaned out the ENTIRE carb, checked the gas and its filter, but nothing helps. Any ideas why or how to fix it?

What causes a car to start and then die?
But if there is a fuel leak somewhere, then the proper amount of fuel won’t be able to make it to the combustion chamber. This might cause the engine to still start, but it won’t be able to keep it running. That is why it will die almost immediately after it starts.
Why does my outboard run without starting fluid?
If I spray some starting fluid (WD-40 etc) into the cylinders and continue to spray directly into the Carb, it will run. But merely seconds after I stop spraying directly into the carb, the engine dies, meaning it’s burning the fluid, and not he fuel.
