What does Gascap mean on Jeep Patriot?
Check your gas cap. The pressure inside your gas tank is thrown off-kilter when the gas cap is off or not secured properly. To your car’s on-board diagnostic system, or OBD system, a change in pressure could indicate a leak in the emissions system, so the light is triggered to alert you to the problem.
Why is the gas cap displayed on the odometer?
The most likely reason your display is reading gas cap is that you have an unsolved evaporation code. Most of the time simply replacing the gas cap will fix the problem, but since you have already done that there is a whole list of other things you could check. I would start with your hose that runs to your tank from your fill spout.
What does gas cap light and check engine light come on?
Ok- The P0457 does point to a loose/faulty fuel cap, however, it is diagnosed as an “EVAP System Large Leak Detected” – so- make sure the fuel cap you replaced the old one with meets or exceeds Dodge specs (for example, if you bought a replacement cap from AutoZone, it’s far BELOW Dodge specs, and will NOT seal the system).
What should I do if my gas cap goes out?
I bumped the trip meter button to reset the mileage and “clear” the gascap warning, and drove home, roughly 11 miles. The check engine light never went out, and at home I restarted the engine, and “gascap” returned immediately. I don’t want to lose hope right away…
Can a gas cap code cause a problem?
The bottom line is that evaporation codes are very hard to pin point and usually do not cause any problems at all. So if you decide to do nothing and not spend any money on the problem you will probably be just as well off. Well that is other then being annoyed by your gas cap light.

How to check if your gas cap is the gas cap?
To check and see if it IS the gascap, put some dry gas in when it gets near empty, then fill it up. Put a light layer of gasoline or grease on the gas cap seal, and crank it down. Then clear the battery by pulling the battery cable from the battery and waiting 10 minutes. Reconnect it and drive it for a while.
How to reset the warning light gas cap that is loose?
Open the door. Grasp the gas cap handle and twist it counterclockwise to unscrew it. Remove it. Replace the gas cap. Removing and replacing it ensures the thread seals properly, in case it wasn’t before. Turn the gas cap clockwise to tighten it. Continue turning until you hear it click three times. This ensures it’s seating properly.
