What causes the dipstick on a Harley Davidson to pop?
It’s called sumping . Then if the tank gets topped off and when the engine starts the pump will evacuate the crankcase resulting in the tank overflowing just saying . Well what i have found is if you run your softail at the full mark it will blow the oil out til it gets down to between full and add.

Try some marvel mystery oil added to the oil but don’t overfill the level. It will loosen up any sludge that will be removed after you run it a few hundred miles and drain the oil when hot.

The original parts from my 70 SS350 measures 10 3/4″ from the flange to the full mark. I think that must be what Chevy intended. Does this apply to the v6’s also??
Which is the correct mark on a dipstick?

Now my question, the dipstick has a mark on the lower end which I presume is the filler mark, should the oil level be at this mark to be OK? or above it? and is there a higher mark for when full? The lower mark is the cold or add mark and the upper mark is the full/warm mark.

A gal friend of mine has a 2007 softtail….. I wasn’t there when this occured nor to see how much oil came out but i think she MUST OF been over full cause when I checked her level after a ride today, it was right on the hot full mark…I DO THINK HER OIL LEVEL WAS TOO HIGH AS NONE NEEDED TO BE ADDED….

Bottom line had to do with the pooling of the oil, scavenging and the build up that would cause the cap to blow off. Top end result…Cracked piston, broken ring. I saw a post on here though that explained why the cap blows off…

Using a FEULING oil pump…. solved the problem way back then that HD SHOULD of DONE back then,,, but HD waited on oil pump until 06 dyna/07 n up 96″ TC’s…. I have HEARD nothing BAD and only GOOD with the improved oil pump n chain tentioner systems: both improved in cams n chain case. That being One reason I bot a new bike 2009 FLHR..
