What are the common problems with cold weather ventilation?
With any of the three strategies, you could end up with comfort problems if the occupants feel cold drafts. This can happen in a variety of ways. With exhaust-only, you could cause a draft through a leaky window or door near an occupied zone. With supply-only, you could be blowing untempered cold air right on occupants with a bad design.
What happens if you don’t have a vent system in your home?
Without a healthy vent system, your home can suffer a variety of annoying problems. A lot of venting issues are mistakenly thought to be drainage issues in mobile homes but they are absolutely caused by improper or imbalanced venting design.
Do you blow air directly at occupants when ventilating?
Good HVAC contractors will tell you: Never blow air directly at the occupants. When ventilating with cold outdoor air, this is even more true. You want that air to be well-mixed by the time it reaches them. With exhaust-only ventilation, this is hard to do…and yet another reason to avoid that strategy.
Why do soffit vents need to be open in Attic?
Conversely, if there are open soffit vents to allow free flow of air into the attic (or cathedral ceiling roof space), the negative pressure or “vacuum” created by the exiting attic air is more easily satisfied by inflowing (cooler, more dry) outdoor air than it is by leaking air from the occupied space.
Why are cold air vents open in the fall?
Cold air as you may know falls to the bottom levels whereas hot air rises. By closing the bottom vent, you are forcing the hot air to be drawn into the return system to be cooled by the air conditioning system. By opening the cold air vent during the fall season enables the cold air to be drawn to the furnace and heated.
Where are the cold air return vents located?
Winter is coming and we wanted to simply remind you to properly regulate your vents before the cold takes over. Most homes across the U.S. have forced air systems and in newer homes there will be cold air return vents placed at both the ceiling and the floor of many rooms.
Can a car vent blow cold one side and hot the other?
In a vehicle with dual temperature controls you may encounter a situation where the vent blows cold one side, hot on other side or vice versa.
Is it possible to have no ventilation in the attic?
Without baffles (blinders that prevent outside air from crossing over the vent), a ridge vent may create almost no ventilation at all. Gable vents may circulate air through only a small percentage of your attic.
