What amp should I charge my Optima battery?
10 amps
For regular charging, we recommend a maximum of 10 amps, 13.8 to 15.0 volts. For float charging, we recommend one amp maximum, 13.2 to 13.8 volts. Under normal (engine-starting) conditions, an OPTIMA battery should never experience “at-rest” voltages below 10.5 volts.
Do OPTIMA batteries require a special charger?
Can I use a regular or factory battery charger on my OPTIMA battery? In just about every case, the answer is absolutely! It’s a common misconception that regular chargers or OE battery chargers that come with brand-new vehicles cannot charge OPTIMA batteries, because they are designed for lead-acid batteries.
Can I use a trickle charger on an AGM battery?
Severely discharging and leaving the battery discharged can cause harm and shorten life in AGM batteries. If you’re not going to use the battery for a week or more at a time, we highly recommend a charger maintainer (also called a trickle charger) to keep the battery from discharging.
Is there a maximum voltage for an Optima Charger?
14.7 volts, no current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). When current falls below one amp, finish with two-amp constant current for one hour. Maximum voltage 15.6 volts (regulated), no current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). Charge until current drops below one amp.
How do you charge an Optima air conditioner?
Hook the Optima to the regular battery in parallel with the jumper cables. (positive to positive, negative to negative) Connect the charger to the regular battery and turn it on. Wait and hour and check the Optima. If it’s hot to the touch or gassing out the vents, shut it down! The battery is no good. Warm to the touch is okay.
What kind of battery is in an Optima?
A dark-cased RedTop or BlueTop Optima is a starting battery. Starting batteries are designed to be discharged a little, then be charged up fairly quickly by your charging system. Basically, the starter skims off some electricity from the battery for starting, and it’s rapidly refilled once you start up.
What happens if you recharge an Optima battery?
Any battery that becomes very hot or makes a hissing sound while recharging should be disconnected immediately. Failure to fully charge a battery can result in poor performance and reduction in capacity. These guidelines are intended for typical consumer applications.
What should voltage be on Optima battery charger?
If your charger will remain on indefinitely, the voltage should be at 13.8 volts maximum with a one-amp maximum current. We would only recommend trickle charge for charge maintenance purposes only. Will my high-output alternator damage the OPTIMA battery?
How does the Optima digital 400 12V Charger work?
The OPTIMA Chargers Digital 400 12V Performance Maintainer and Battery Charger automatically maximizes battery life and performance with a built-in battery health mode. It also offers a hybrid LED battery-charging gauge with LCD screen and a quick-set battery type selection for easy operation.
How can I tell if my Optima battery is too low?
The charger sees the voltage in the Optima as too low to charge. The regular battery has a higher voltage, but still needs to be charged – the charger will want it to be at least 12.7 volts. This is not too low to charge, so the charger will turn on and flow current.
