Is there a problem with my Lexus RX350 engine?
Dealer service pulled the the noise won’t cause any damage to the engine. I have a 2010 RX350 with about 9,000 miles. The engine has developed loud valve and tappet (I think) noise after about 5,000 miles.

The injector noise cannot be mistaken for pinging or detonation, except by neophytes. You won’t find a gasoline, internal combustion engine pinging at idle unless it was designed to do so, such as the single cylinder, adjustable compression engine used to test gasoline for octane rating.
Is the Lexus RX 350 a direct injection car?
Unlike the 3.5L in the IS350,GS350..the RX350 doesn’t have direct injection.Nor does the ES 350. I had the same knocking,rapping problem on my ’09 RX350 that started at about 20K miles and only in cold weather till engine warmed up.. Check your oil level and oil quality to be sure it’s in good condition. The Lexus IS 350 has another, more serious issue with similar symptoms. There was as issue with oil getting to the cam gears in the Lexus IS 350. This is more of a rattle noise than a complete knock.

There are some fairly simple self-diagnostic steps you can take to get a better understanding of what’s going on under the hood before dropping it off at the shop. Gas additives (fuel injector cleaners, octane boost, etc.) A knocking noise that only happens on engine start up for a few seconds might be a sign that the oil is bad.
