Is the steering box on a jeep TJ working?
The box is mounted tight to the frame. The main shaft will only move if I turn the steering wheel more than the play allows. The U-joint is fine, no noticeable play. I would search “Dodge Durango steering box for Jeep TJ”, if your going to replace it, might as well spend less and upgrade too. Who installed the box a few days ago?

The FSM states that you can adjust the steering gear box. One of the reasons stated for this is loose steering, which I have. Based on prior advice, I was going to replace the entire gear box until I read that adjustment is possible. The FSM says to take it out, bleed it, & put it in a vise.

What to do if your steering box is not installed?
Or has the steering box not properly been installed (it was replaced a few days ago because the old one was leaking). I would pop the top cover off and take a look inside. It is the five bolts on the top of the case. Tap it with a mallet to break the seal. I would inspect the pattern on the three tooth fork and the steering gear its self.

Not all Wranglers are set exactly the same so when making adjustments it’s recommended to do minor adjustments at a time, then test the heaviness of the steering and adjust accordingly or back off. The recommend adjustment is a clockwise turn of 1/8 of a turn. The box is preloaded in the factory so it doesn’t chew up the gears up.

Once your toe-in has been set, re-tighten the tie-rod sleeves. After that, it’s time to center up that steering wheel. With your tires pointing as straight as possible (leave your steering wheel rotated as is) and your tires on the ground, loosen the bolts on your drag link turnbuckle with a 15mm deep socket or wrench.
