The heating pads have the cooling layer built-in to allow the seat venting to blow through the seat. The heating element is covered by a felt material that sits right against the leather.

The heater core has coolant lines which connect to it and produce the actual heat. A fan then pushes the heat through the ventilation system and into the cabin. If a heater core gets clogged or the blend door becomes jammed, the unit will need to be removed.

AFAIK, the heater core is part of the whole HVAC assembly unit….out comes the Dash. Now if your heater core DID blow a leak, that coolant should be exiting the evap drain hose, not a random firewall hole.
