Ron & bejay, in my experience, the Tamiya white putty is one of the best hobby putties out there. The basic putty is also very good. They are both lacquer based with the gray putty being a coarser grain than the white. I personally would not make the trip back to the store to exchange it.

Bejay, I have never had a bad batch of Tamiya putty, either white or gray, and find both to be very easy to sand.
What kind of putty to use on a model tank?
I use Tamiya fine white putty for small gaps as seen in the picture. I use a 2 part epoxy filler called Milliput to fill in large gaps. Apply the putty of the seam and make sure to press it into the gap. Once dried, you can sand it down flush to the model and it will make it look a lot better.
