How do you manually open the 2017 Subaru Outback trunk?
Method 2 – Rear Latch
- Press the button located directly under the emblem of the trunk, in the center. The Trunk will OPEN.
- To CLOSE it, press the image of the opened trunk located on the inside of the trunk door at the bottom.
- When you press the button again you will hear TWO beeps and the door will close.

How to reset rear lift gate on Subaru Outback?
That should be “press and hold” – and it is the button on the outside of the rear gate. Holding it pressed down for more than 5 seconds (maybe 7? a good count of 10). thx all. Will try that next time, as I think I have a recurring problem here. Gonna be a once a month deal.
What should I do if my rear lift gate is not working?
Pull down the rear gate until it starts to close automatically. The system will be initialized once the gate is fully closed. Check that the power rear gate operates correctly. If the above fails then I would try disconnecting the battery.
Can a dead battery open the rear lift gate?
I understand that Honda/Acura still uses that design; wish Subaru would. The Acura does have multiple sensors hidden in the weather seal. Completely dead battery can still open the rear hatch to get out the jumper cables. Not sure what happens with the powered lift gate in a dead battery condition and you can’t get to the inside release.

Why is my rear lift gate not opening?
Not opening whole way, etc. About a month ago it went into a mode where any “open liftgate” button resulted in 3 beeps, no opening. I could open it manually by crawling in the rear from a door, removing the trim piece and throwing the lever with a screwdriver, but it didn’t fix the problem.

Owner’s manual page 157 says that if the rear liftgate is closed, the reset procedure is: Keep pressing the rear gate opener button until it is unlocked (I assume this means on the tailgate and not the remote) Lift up the rear gate Pull down the rear gate until it starts to close automatically.
