The problem is common enough that at lest one after market company is marketing a redesigned shifter cable that does not use the plastic bushings. The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that when attempting to shift into four wheel drive, the shifter linkage cable separated from the transfer case.
