Does the front axle have a differential?
The front and rear axles each have an open differential. Although this system provides much better traction than a two-wheel-drive vehicle, it has two main drawbacks.
Where does the axle go in the front diff?
Was just checking the CV joints in all the axles and noticed not the inner CV but where it goes into the front diff on PASSENGER side is loose and I can rock it considerably. Was just wondering if others are rock solid like I think it should be or does the inner part of that axle float in the diff and not dead solid in a bearing.
What’s the difference between front and rear differentials?
The center differential splits the torque between the front and rear differential inputs, which each then split the remaining torque from left to right. Four-wheel drive systems found on trucks and SUVs typically have a transfer case instead of a center differential. An open differential is the simplest and most common differential.

Are there loose axles in the front diff?
I was greasing the bike yesterday and my front axles are extremely loose in the front diff (in my opinion). I can grab them close to where the joint goes into the differential and can move it like a 1/4″ up and down and side to side. The AWD works fine and I can randomly hear a clunk when going over bumps, I assume from the axle being loose.

What’s the difference between front and rear wheel drive differentials?
On front wheel drive vehicles, the term “transaxle” may be used interchangeably with “transmission” or “differential” depending on who you talk to. Most rear wheel drive vehicles will have a standalone differential between the rear wheels that is linked to the transmission via a driveshaft.
How big is axle play in front diff?
By side to side I meant front to back and up and down on the splines where it goes into the front diff. I can grab the inner joint and it will move over 1/4″ inch in each direction.
