Can you skip first gear on a motorcycle?
It is possible to skip gears when downshifting on a motorcycle—skipping gears when downshifting can even be done without engaging the clutch. There is no limit to how many gears you can skip when downshifting. You can go from sixth to first, from fifth to second, fifth to first, or third to first, and so on.
Do motorcycles tell you when to shift?
Basically, your bike will tell you it needs to shift by how the engine sounds and how it responds – this is how I like to teach my students, as relying on a tachometer (which shows the engine RPM or Revolutions Per Minute) is one more thing that takes your eyes off the road.
Why does my bike shift into first gear when I stop?
The problem you are probably having is because the bike transmission is not a synchronized transmission. That means it has to be moving in order to get it to shift. Technically you should already be in first by the time you are stopped, however, I sometimes also forget to kick it down into first from time to time.
How can I get my bike into first gear?
What you need to do is let some slack out on the clutch just enough to barley engage it and you feel it start to pull the bike then it should knock down into first without any problem. You can also try to rock it back and fourth just a few inches but I find the clutch method much easier.
What causes a motorcycle engine to lose power?
A vacuum leak leads to too much air being added to the air-fuel mixture the carburetor makes. When your motorcycle engine is getting too much air and not enough fuel, it won’t run right. In fact, the more gas you try to give the motorcycle, the more air will be sucked into the unwanted holes which will ultimately make you lose power.
What’s the best way to shift into first gear?
You can also try to rock it back and fourth just a few inches but I find the clutch method much easier. Older cars, all motorcycles, and heavy duty diesel engines are the same way. You had to feather the clutch a tad to lock them into gear. So next time just feather the clutch a bit and knock it down into first.
What causes a motorcycle engine to not turn?
If it will turn, then the crankshaft, piston (s), mainshaft gears and clutch are probably OK and the problem is in the kickstarter or electric starter geartrain. If it will not turn, pull in the clutch lever. If the crankshaft now turns the problem is probably in the mainshaft gears.
Why is the clutch on my motorcycle stuck?
It is possible that the mainshaft gears and the clutch are locked up but usually it is the pistons. If the clutch is seized, you probably will be able to turn the crankshaft back and forth just a bit. If so, pull the clutch cover and inspect the clutch.

What to do if your motorcycle engine is stuck?
Because the engine is frozen, you can’t turn it over to close the valves. Therefore, you must remove the cams or rocker arms so the valves will close. To do this, you may have to cut the cam chain. If you do have to cut the cam chain, check and see if the cam chain has a master link.
