Can you fail the HSC?
Achieving the HSC is different from getting a driver’s licence or an ATAR. You do not receive a simple ‘pass’ or ‘fail’, nor do you get a single rank or mark for all courses. The HSC results are a detailed package showing you the level of knowledge and skills you achieved in each course.

You will be assigned a NESA Student Number by your school, which NESA uses to identify you. This student number will appear as you activate your account. If you have forgotten your NESA student number, contact your school.

The scores of HSC students will be calculated on a 30:30:40 formula, which is the ‘best of three’ subject marks of Class 10, final exam marks of Class 11 and remaining based on college-level assessment in Class 12, which can be either unit tests, first-semester exams, or practice exams.
How is Atar calculated NSW?
This is because in NSW the ATAR is calculated from 2 units of English (even if they are your lowest units, as in this example) plus the next best 8 units (to make 10 units in total), and in this example, Society and Culture has the lowest scaled mark of all the courses (apart from English).
