Anything that’s designed to connect up to a USB socket of any description (including microUSB) should also be rated for the official USB power spec – either 0.5-0.9 amps at 5V, so the device either complies with this as a charging protocol or it doesn’t, and if it didn’t it would be completely pointless to use any kind of USB-based charger.

I proved it worked by trying the actual lighter itself, so i know it has current too. But when i plug in a usb device and the iphone cable it will not charge my phone. I have checked the usb device, it is giving me 5v.

If I use my 2A Nook Color charger, it perks right up nice and quick even if I’m using it. Any supply problems are due to the charger, not the lighter socket…the socket itself is fully capable of supplying 10A@12V. This would be a stellar little guy, if they had it in stock.

As suggested, it’s probably the charger you’re plugging into the lighter socket and not the socket, since the socket is rated for enough voltage & amperage to zap your phone unless it’s attenuated.

I have a Galaxy Note, which is a real power glutton – running it at all while it is charging off the cigarette lighter actually causes the battery to slowly drain.
