Why is the shift lever at the transaxle made of plastic?
The intermediate shift lever at the transaxle shift linkage is partially made of hard plastic (white part in the picture below). Over time the plastic can wear out causing the shifting to become sloppy.
What causes a gear shifter to become loose?
Generally, most all gear shifters will become loose due to aggressive gear changing from the gear shifter. Aggressive gear changing can cause damage to the bushing on the bottom of the gear shifter lever.

What should I do if my shift shaft broke?
If you hold your shift lever in the “up shift” position, you can get a straight shot in. Always be super aware of your cylinder fins. Do not pry or push against the fins. They will break. Also be careful not to slip and cut your hand on the cylinder fins. Try to turn the allen bolt 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn.
