Why is the camshaft sensor not getting stable 12V?
Long story short – in one of the answers it was suspected that camshaft position sensor is not getting stable 12V, so as a test it was suggested to connect Battery+ directly to the sensor’s camshaft position sensor’s Orange pin and car started successfully.
How are the spark plugs attached to a camshaft?
As the camshaft lobes rotate, the distributor is powered, spinning a centralized rotor that has a magnetic ending which triggers individual electrical lobes as it spins in a clockwise direction. Each electrical lobe is attached to a corresponding spark plug wire that distributes electrical current to each spark plug.
Where are the spark plugs on a General Motors engine?
The placement of each spark plug wire on the distributor cap is directly correlated to the engines firing order. For example; a standard V-8 General Motors engine has eight individual cylinders. However, each cylinder fires (or reaches top dead center) at a specific time for optimal engine efficiency.
How can you tell if a spark plug is defective?
Gently drag the screwdriver down the length of each spark plug wire, around the coil, and the boots. Look for electrical arcs and listen for a snapping noise that may indicate a high-voltage electrical leak. If you see an electrical arc from the wire to the screwdriver, the wire is defective.
Can a camshaft sensor cause a car not to have spark?
The advantages to such a system include the absence of a rotor or distributor cap, which may burn or crack with use, along with the absence of a vacuum advance diaphragm, which can rupture or leak. But when a camshaft position sensor takes the place of a distributor, failure of that sensor could result in there being no spark.
What happens if the camshaft position sensor is not working?
In such a case, the computer would calculate the need for spark advance (when the spark plug fires sooner in the compression stroke than otherwise) to be almost maximum. But if the camshaft position sensor is not working, the car’s computer cannot know when to fire the ignition coils to achieve the desired advance.
Where is the spark plug on an ATV?
To locate the ignition coil, simply follow the wire connecting to your spark plug. Once you have the ignition coil out, you can hook your multi-meter up to it to begin testing. Start by testing the primary side of the ignition coil, where the ignition coil was wired, not the side that goes to the spark plug.
What’s the voltage between the sensor harness and battery?
Update#1: I added load (resistor and yellow LED light) between sensor harness’es orange wire and Battery -. Voltage dropped from 2.4V to 1.98V, and the LED did light up (the alligator wire from battery- to the breadboard changes color to white and is not captured in the picture):
Why do I get 2.4V on Orange sensor wire?
Or there is still possibility of something else causing that 2.4V on Orange sensor wire (e.g. after unplugging PCM the hypothetical 3rd circuit was not getting power hence it could not cause voltage leak on EMS2 circuit)? Why with lower cable to PCM unplugged, but upper one plugged, I suddenly start to see 11.81V instead of 2.4V or 0V?
How is the camshaft position sensor connected to the ECU?
The wiring harness should be routed away from the high-tension cable to prevent interference. This procedure will determine if the Camshaft Position Sensor is able to send signal to the ECU. This is done by measuring the voltage across the signal and ground wires of the sensor.
Can a faulty camshaft sensor cause a knocking sound?
Question: Can a faulty camshaft sensor cause a knocking sound? Answer: No, a faulty camshaft sensor can’t cause a knocking sound unless it affects ignition timing. Question: Can a faulty camshaft sensor cause a P0300 code? Answer: A number of faulty components may trigger a P0300 code, including: a bad camshaft position sensor
What happens when the camshaft position sensor fails?
Once your car’s computer detects a CMP sensor failure, it will trigger the engine light and store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in its memory (see the table below for common camshaft position sensor trouble diagnostic codes). As you may expect, the specific location of the camshaft position sensor varies by a vehicle’s make and model.
How much does a bad camshaft sensor cost?
In this case, because of an inaccurate reading from a bad camshaft position sensor, more fuel than necessary is injected into the engine which causes your fuel economy to drop. To replace a camshaft position sensor, you can expect to pay anywhere from $120 to $300. Parts alone will run about $50 to $200.
What do you need to know about camshaft position sensor?
The camshaft position sensor (CMP) is just one of the many electrical parts found in a vehicle. We’ll go over what this component is, the symptoms of a bad camshaft position sensor, and what you can expect its replacement cost to be when it’s faulty.

How can I tell if my camshaft sensor is failing?
If your vehicle idles roughly, stalls frequently, has a drop in engine power, stumbles frequently, has reduced gas mileage, or accelerates slowly, these are all signs your camshaft position sensor could be failing.
What does no power to crank and cam sensor mean?
When tried to start the vehicle I got no spark after testing all sensors and coil packs I found no power to crank and cam sensors tested pcm plug found power to some wires tested ground at plug found other wires were ground. Which wires should be power and which should be ground?
How does a camshaft position sensor work on a car?
To determine which cylinder is in its power stroke, your car’s computer monitors the rotating position of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft position using a camshaft position (CMP) sensor. It uses this information to adjust the spark timing and the operation of the fuel injectors.
What is the code for the cam sensor?
I replaced the cam sensor twice, changed the DME and realigned EWS-DME, checked the wiring from Sensor to DME connector, bypassed wirirng from DME to Sensor; but still get get code code 65 (P0340). I checking and do not have +12VDC between pin 1 (DME #65) and pin 3 (DME #43) with ignition switch in position 2.
