Why is my water pump and thermostat not working?
The radiator, water pump, and thermostat are definite possibilities, but there are a few others that are possible also. A faulty cooling fan is the first thing that comes to mind, but it could also be a head gasket issue, clogged coolant passages inside the engine, or faulty radiator hoses.
What causes a car to overheat with a new thermostat?
A leaky head gasket or a cracked cylinder head are normally due to expansion and contraction of engine materials along with high pressures caused by excessive overheating. The Integrity of the system cooling system is compromised if there is a leaky head gasket or cracked cylinder head.
Can a defective radiator cap cause engine to overheat?
A defective radiator cap will cause engine overheating in a number of ways. Three of the ways a radiator cap can cause overheating are, 1) Not holding in pressure and allowing the coolant to vent out or escape the cooling system. 2) No providing the proper pressure and not raising the boiling point.

How does the water pump in a radiator work?
The water pump circulates coolant through the cooling tubes of the radiator, where it cools and travels through the engine passages and hoses. Coolant, or antifreeze, is designed to flow smoothly through all of the cooling passages, with no air blockages.

How to tell if a car’s water pump needs replacement?
How to Tell if a Car’s Water Pump Needs Replacement. Your car’s water pump is an important part of your vehicle. It is the part that continually pumps coolant to your vehicle’s engine so that it doesn’t overheat.
Why is the water pump important to your car?
He is an ASE Certified Automotive technician and has worked in automotive repair since 1999. Your car’s water pump is an important part of your vehicle. It is the part that continually pumps coolant to your vehicle’s engine so that it doesn’t overheat. A leak or a faulty bearing can cause serious damage to your car’s engine.
How often should you change your water pump?
Some water pumps have plastic impellers that move the coolant and some coolant is corrosive once the additives wear away (you’re supposed to change your coolant every three to seven years to prevent engine damage when these additives wear away). The water pump impeller can wear out, thus no longer moving coolant around, so your car overheats.
Is the water pump still hot after replacing the radiator?

What to do if your Radiator is overheating?
Not more than 1/2″ give when pushed with a finger. (2) a new radiator cap. The cooling system is supposed to be under pressure and caps do age out occasionally. (3) put the thermostat in a pan of water and heat the pan past the temperature the thermostat is supposed to open at. See if it opens.
What does it mean when your Radiator reservoir is full?
Suppose you notice that your radiator is empty, but your coolant reservoir tank is full. In that case, it might mean that there is or there are few damages in the components of the engine cooling system, which means that there is possibly a faulty radiator or radiator hose, a damaged gasket, or a radiator cap, or some other faulty components.
How to tell if your coolant reservoir is overflowing?
How to tell if your over heating problem is caused by the water pump. Faulty water pumps slow or stop the flow of fluid through the cooling system. The result is overheating of the engine. You will see coolant fluid on the ground and around the water pump when the water pump has gone bad. Water pumps either work properly or go bad in a hurry.
Can a faulty radiator cap cause coolant to overflow?
A faulty radiator cap can cause the coolant reservoir to overflow and overheating the vehicle’s engine system. If the radiator hoses are always transporting hot fluid, then the hoses will wear out and will finally tear.

Do you add coolant to the radiator or the reservoir?
If your vehicle has a reservoir, the coolant should be added directly to the reservoir instead of the radiator. Except in a case where you have an empty reservoir tank, then you can add the coolant directly to the radiator but consequently top the radiator through the coolant reservoir.
Can a faulty coolant sensor cause a car to overheat?
A faulty engine temperature sensor can cause your vehicle to overheat by sending a permanent called or a permanent hot signal. Common symptoms of a faulty coolant temperature sensor are: The catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device located in your exhaust pipe before the muffler.
Why is my car overheating after replacing the radiator?
Overheating. Just replaced radiator and thermostat, but still hasn’t fixed the problem. My car overheated the other day, and it was leaking coolant horribly. I got a new radiator, which stopped the leaking, but the car was still overheating so then we tried replacing the thermostat but it is overheating even now.
What causes a radiator to stop dissipating heat?
This can happen if the reinforcing spring inside the hose is missing or damaged. The most common problems radiators fall prey to are clogging (both internal and external) and leaks. Dirt, bugs and debris can block air flow through the core; and reduce the radiator’s ability to dissipate heat.
What happens when the thermostat on a car fails to open?
Finally, the thermostat must be doing its job to keep the engine’s average temperature within the normal range. If the thermostat fails to open; it will effectively block the flow of coolant and the engine will overheat. Severe overheating can often damage a good thermostat. If the engine has overheated replace the thermostat.
Why does my water pump have no crank?
If you are getting a voltage drop from 12 to 7 volts, then this is going to be the cause of the no crank. If you have tried other good batteries, then you have problems in the battery… The code P0453 is for the purge control valve; it’s most likely bad and needs to be replaced.
Why is the water pump on my car not working?
If the hose is not warm due to warm coolant being circulated it means that the pump is not working. The water pump runs off of an accessory belt driven by the motor. If the belt is loose or worn it may not turn the water pump at the speed required to pump the coolant fast enough to properly cool the engine.

Check the wiring for the fan as far as you are able, it should have a connector for removing the fan housing when replacing the radiator, see that it’s plugged in. If the connector is good and the wiring you can see isn’t abraded, it may be your fuse.
When to replace a water pump in a car?
The cooling system thermostat should be replaced at the same time as the water pump particularly on a 20 year old car and particularly if the thermostat has never been replaced. Finally, all rubber coolant hoses, including heater hoses, should be carefully inspected for any rot, weakness, cuts, oil saturation or other damage.
Can a bad water pump cause a coolant leak?
A coolant leak happens when the gaskets and other seals start wearing out or are completely damaged. Ideally, these gaskets and seals ensures that the flow of coolant is consistently delivered from the radiator to the engine. A coolant leak is a common symptom of a bad water pump.
Can you drive a car with a bad water pump?
When the water pump is good, it draws the coolant out of the radiator and pushes it to the engine. A typical bad water pump will cause overheating. Driving an overheating engine can be hazardous and can cause more damages. The water pump in a car is an important component, driving a car with a bad water pump is never encouraged.

What causes the radiator to drop when the engine is hot?
With the radiator cap off, start the engine and look through the radiator opening while the engine warms. The radiator fluid level should drop noticeably and start moving once the engine is hot. The drop is caused by the thermostat at the end of the top radiator hose opening.
