Why does the radiator fan keep turning on when the car is turned off?
The radiator fan will be controlled by the engine ECU (electronic control unit) through a relay. The relay is most likely your problem. When the fan shuts off, it can cause a small arc on the relay points that will weld them together and keep the relay and therefore the fan turned on.
When does the cooling fan come on or off?
I’ve read that the cooling fan will run the whole time when either the A/C is on or the vent control is set to defrost, regardless of whether the engine is cold or hot. In my case, the cooling fan comes on when the engine is cold, even with the HVAC off and it will remain running at full speed when the engine is running, again with the HVAC off.
What are the signs of a bad cooling fan?
Common signs include the engine running hot and cooling fans either not functioning or running all the time. 1. Engine running hot 2. Cooling fans do not function 3. Cooling fans stay on at all times Most modern vehicles use electric cooling fans to help pull air through the radiator so that it can keep the engine cool.
When to turn on the cooling fan relay?
The relay will usually be activated once it is detected that the vehicle’s temperature approaches excessively high temperatures. Usually a faulty cooling fan relay will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver that service may be required.
Is it normal for a radiator fan to run all the time?
The fan running with the A/C or defrost turned on is normal, it has nothing to do with the engine being cold or not. The problem is when the fan stays on ALL the time, even with the A/C and defrost off.

How long does a car cooling system fan stay on?
It’s perfectly normal to have your cooling system fan stay on after you’ve shut off the car, but it shouldn’t stay on longer than ten minutes. In some cases the fan stays on too long, which causes the battery to drain.
