Why does my XF go into restricted performance mode?

My high (motorway) mileage XF has been going into restricted performance mode on a few occasions lately, sometimes it has happened after the car has been sat with engine running and air-con on so maybe it’s getting too hot but other times there seems no rhyme or reason.
