Why are my right side brake lights not working?
Starting at the trailer side connector, follow the wires back to the tail lights looking for any sections that are pinched, frayed or damaged. It may be possible that there is a short on the right turn signal and brake light wire.
Why are the brakes not applying when you push the pedal?
There will be a little free play in the linkages to the master cylinder/ brake fluid compressing in the brake lines so the brakes will not be applying until you push the pedal further any way. It reduces the risk of your brake lights flickering while driving if pedal is bumped. But I am not a mechanic.
Do you have to start the car to see the brake lights?

You will want the sensor further from the pedal to have the lights come on earlier. Use a mirror or have a friend watch to ensure you have the proper adjustment and they do not stay on when you are not touching the pedal. In the case the switch is not adjustable, you have 3 options. Replace the switch with a new one to see if it is any better.
Is there a problem with the brake light?
There is no problem with the driver side or left turn signal lights Since the STOCK tail light is red for brakes and amber for signal there are two seperate bulbs, not likely a bulb problem.The brake light circuit is shorted/bleeding into the signal light circuit! Is it wired for towing a trailer?

If pushing on the brake will illuminate the signal lights then turning on the signal lights has got to illum. the brake lights NOW where this short is that’s what you or a repair shop will have to find! It is going to be at the rear light or wiring as the two circuits do not pass through a common switch or circuit. Not on this vehicle!!
