Where to put the transmission fluid in a Subaru Forester?
Replacing the ATF filter, thinking it was the engine oil filter. Draining the transmission fluid & filling the front differential (passenger side) instead of the transmission (driver side).

Where is the ATF dipstick on a Subaru Forester?
When looking at the car from the front, the ATF dipstick is on the right (us drivers side) and the front diff dipstick is on the left (us passenger side). I used Valvolene MaxLife High Milage Dex III ATF during my last flush.

Is there a problem with my 2004 Subaru Forester?
I’m starting to diagnose and attempt to fix a few problems on my 2004 Forester X Auto with the intention of selling it (I recently purchased a 2006 XT ).
Why does my Subaru Forester not go into 3rd gear?
One of these problems is the transmission not being able to upshift into 3rd gear once the car has reached operating temperature, it simply free revs (as if I’m stuck in neutral) and will only engage into 3rd gear if I let the rev’s drop right down to around 1k-1.5k and quickly tap on the accelerator and it will ‘clunk’ into 3rd gear.
What kind of ATF do you use on Subaru Forester?
We’re running Redline synthetic ATF in both our Foresters, but most members get the best results from using Subaru specific ATF. With the amount of miles you have, I wouldn’t recommend a flush, just do a drain & refill cycle until you think all the old ATF has been replaced.
